Electric bikes are increasingly becoming an alternative to fuel-consuming vehicles and they are rapidly gaining popularity. In a significant industry shift, ten renowned brands have already entered the EV market, and an additional eight firms are set to launch their products by mid-March. It is worth mentioning that the great interest in the product has come directly from the fact that as many as 34 licenses have been distributed both for electric rickshaws and the remaining electric bikes. This boosted interest resulted in a network of over a hundred showrooms scattered all over three provinces, which satisfy the tastes and the needs of the consumer. These pavilions showcase the powerful features and benefits of electric bikes designed for the informed consumer based, which look beyond gender and professions.
Sabir Sheik, an auto sector consultant and analyst, gave an interview to Express Tribune presenting his take on the subject. He pointed out that the winter season had been a period of slow sales of electric bikes, a situation aggravated by the recent rush in the EV bike influx. The ten leading brands, like Okla, Yadea, Aima, Metro, Evee, Benling, Future, YJ, Tailg, and Winner are among the brands that have started putting together their bikes and moped with spare parts they got in the form of CKD kits which also include receipts of the kind of materials they need for the assembly. Sheikh stressed that there is one crucial difficulty that the EV bicycle producers face; the worsening road conditions in cities such as Lahore, Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur, and such bad conditions are only going to make it harder to ride electric bicycles with tire sizes lower than 8 inches. Traditional bikes, in contrast, usually have tires of at least 18 inches in diameter which are more appropriate for rough terrain. A suitable road for EV bikes would be a smooth road, similar to the conditions encountered in cities such as Islamabad, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, and others that are well maintained. This requirement is consistent with the situation in countries such as Thailand, China, Europe, and Vietnam where EV bikes have achieved massive popularity mainly due to their superior road condition.
Economic Benefits of Electric Bikes
From an economic perspective, electric bikes are the more justifiable option. These electric bikes are equipped with power ratings as low as 2 kWh, which allows them to cover a distance of 85 kilometers in one charge. In long-term use, electric bikes typically consume just 2 units of actual electricity for each charge, coupled with a charging time of 5-6 hours. This low power requirement for the batteries allows the electric bikes to run for 85 kilometers without recharging, which in turn results in a significant reduction in the cost of EV commuting. The low-cost dimension of EV bikes is certainly an incentive, with some models selling at as low as Rs150,000 to Rs360,000, provided the design and special features are not the same. Furthermore, the savings in the cost of fuel are impressive even with the fact that petrol or diesel are so much more expensive than electricity. Year after year these savings are increased so e-bikes are not only an eco-option but also a money-wise choice. Thus, as electric two-wheelers prove to be both environment-friendly and revenue-saving, they become the best strategic investments for the future.
